In the cultural oasis of Santa Cruz Barillas, Asociación Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI) has become a vital bridge to the international coffee community. Widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated and well-organized cooperatives in the world, ASOBAGRI brings together more than 1,400 members across 80 communities. Each producer cultivates and processes coffee on small farms equipped with their own micro-mills, creating a diverse yet highly coordinated network of growers.

Supporting this network requires a thoughtful and localized approach to training and technical assistance. ASOBAGRI promotes innovative, sustainable practices tailored to members’ needs, such as transforming coffee pulp into organic fertilizer. This not only reduces the cost of transporting commercial fertilizers from distant regions, but also creates a rich, natural source of plant nutrition that improves both yields and cup quality.

The cooperative’s commitment to quality is evident in its remarkably consistent drying practices. Many members use mobile raised drying beds that can be stacked and covered overnight to protect the coffee, then unstacked and spread in the sun during the day to ensure even drying. In addition, ASOBAGRI operates centralized warehouses for storing dried parchment coffee, along with a professional cupping laboratory where producers receive immediate quality feedback, strengthening quality control at every stage of production.
